PL girls win twice

The Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball team earned a pair of non-conference wins to open the season – winning at Pierz 75-69 on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and pounding Bemidji 86-63 at home on Thursday, Nov. 29.

“We didn’t play real well at Pierz, but made a nice comeback to win,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale. “We really played well (against Bemidji) as we got off to a great start. We blew the game open with an 18-0 run.”

The Patriots, who were scheduled to host Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, Dec. 4, will then host Thief River Falls at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, and East Grand Forks at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Patriots 86, Bemidji 63

On Thursday, Nov. 29 at Pequot Lakes, Kayla Miller had 22 points, Katie White 20 and Vanessa Lane 17 in a non-conference win. Miller and Jessica Kreitz each grabbed 11 rebounds.

Bemidji was led in scoring by Jess Yost with 17, although she only had four free throws in the first half.

The Patriots led 9-7 before going on an 18-0 run to lead 27-7. Pequot Lakes went on to lead 45-28 at intermission. In the second half, Lane scored seven straight points to extend the lead to 60-36 with 11:30 remaining. White hit a pair of three-point baskets to keep the host team ahead in the final minutes.

“We really shot well,” said Dale, whose team shot 60 percent from the field. “We used our quickness for a lot of fast-break layups, and Katie (White) was four of six on three-point baskets.”

Patriots 75, Pierz 69

On Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Pierz, Pequot Lakes overcame a 12-point deficit with 11 minutes remaining.

Lane led the Patriots with 20 points, Kreitz added 17 with eight rebounds and White drained three 3-pointers to finish with 10.

Pequot Lakes trailed for most of the game’s first 25 minutes, including trailing 35-31 at intermission. The Patriots were behind 49-37 with 11:20 left before outscoring the Pioneers 38-20.

Pequot Lakes later trailed 57-52 before a layup by Kreitz and rebound baskets by Lane and Bzdok gave the visitors a 58-57 lead. The game was eventually tied at 61, 63 and 65 before Pequot Lakes grabbed a 68-65 lead on a three-point basket by White.

Abby Palmer’s turnaround jumper made it 70-65, and the Patriots then clinched it with Lane making three of four free throws and Kreitz converting two of two from the charity stripe.
