Patriots crushed by Hawley
THE HAWLEY NUGGETS BUILT A 42-0 HALFTIME LEAD AND HUMBLED THE PEQUOT LAKES PATRIOTS 62-6 IN A HEART ‘O LAKES CONFERENCE GAME ON FRIDAY, OCT. 12.
The Nuggets, 7-0 overall and ranked No. 6 in Class A, rolled up 466 yards of total offense while the Patriots combined for just 122.
Pequot Lakes, 2-4 overall, are scheduled to play Thief River Falls at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Fargodome.
Hawley scored on its first drive after stopping the Patriots on downs. The Nuggets’ Alex Ames broke loose for a 62-yard run. Ames later moved the ball to the PL two-yard line, where Chris Buttke ran it in to make it 7-0 after Gary Althoff’s conversion kick.
Tyler Tappe returned the ensuing kickoff to the Patriots’ 35. Pequot Lakes gained a first down when Joel Ebnet, replacing Jordan Redmond at quarterback as the senior was out due to illness, completed a 10-yard pass to Justin Mackenthun. The Patriots moved to Hawley’s 45, but then turned over the ball on a fumble that was recovered by Logan Stoa with 1:06 left in the opening quarter.
The Nuggets scored two plays later when Ames ran 55 yards for a score. The two-point conversion failed and Hawley led 13-0 after one quarter.
Hawley started another drive at its own 46 following a Pequot Lakes punt. The Nuggets scored 10 plays later when quarterback Ben Ellefson carried for a short touchdown run to make it 20-0 midway through the second quarter.
The Patriots were again forced to punt, and Hawley took over at midfield. The Nuggets quickly moved downfield and scored when Jordan Harms passed 36 yards to Ellefson. Harms ran the two-point conversion to make it 28-0 with 3:53 remaining until intermission.
Hawley wasn’t done scoring in the first half. Less than a minute later, a pitchout from Ebnet was fumbled and the Nuggets recovered at the Patriots’ 18. Ames eventually ran into the end zone from eight yards to make it 35-0.
Hawley again stopped Pequot Lakes on downs. The Nuggets moved downfield and scored when Harms passed 18 yards to Aaron Regnier for a score to make it 42-0.
Hawley dominated the opening half, led by Ames rushing 10 times for 154 yards.
The Patriots began their first drive of the second half on their 38. But three plays later, Dillon Omberg intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the PL 38. Harms carried the ball to the 29, and on the next play Buttke broke loose for a touchdown and a 48-0 lead just 2:18 into the half.
The Patriots started at their 29, but were forced to punt with freshmen C.J. Borleis at quarterback. Hawley moved to ball, but missed a field goal attempt from 36 yards.
Pequot Lakes was again forced to punt, and the Nuggets’ offense drove down to the Patriots’ goal line. That’s where Cody Cook scored from the one-yard line to make it 54-0.
Hawley would score again with just over seven minutes left on running time when Dalton Leaf ran 11 yards for the score. Jay Lura ran the two-point conversion to make it 62-0.
Kyle Narveson returned the kickoff to midfield. He then carried three times to the Hawley 26. Narveson eventually scored on a 22-yard burst up the middle with 3:00 left. The conversion run failed and the final score was 62-6.
Narveson finished with 49 yards rushing while Tappe rushed for 40 yards. Ebnet completed two of six passes for 23 yards, both receptions were by Travis Jacobson.
