Crookston tops Patriots in tennis playoffs
The Pequot Lakes Patriots were defeated by Crookston 4-3 in the Section 8A tournament on Friday, Oct. 12, at Grand Forks, N.D.
Haley Wiebolt and Syndney Holt captured singles victories for the Patriots while Elli Erholtz-Lauren Bengtson won at No. 2 doubles.
“We had beaten Crookston 4-3 earlier this season, but they had been playing well over the past two weeks,” said Pequot head coach Monica Sergent, whose team finishes 14-4 overall. “So we knew we were evenly matched. We didn’t play as well as we’re capable of playing, and Crookston played well.”
Last year, the Patriots lost to Staples-Motley in the section final.
“We were hoping to get to the championship and get another chance at Staples-Motley,” Sergent said. “Overall, I’m happy with our season. We had a nice year.”
This time, Crookston advanced to face the Cardinals in the final. S-M earned a 4-3 win and advanced to the Class A state meet for the eighth consecutive year. The Cardinals, ranked fourth in the state, will play at state on Oct. 23-24, in Minneapolis.
