Patriots down Crookston 34-20
The Pequot Lakes Patriots rode the legs of junior running back Tyler Tappe, who rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns, to defeat Crookston 34-20 in Heart O’Lakes Conference football action on Friday, Oct. 5, at Pine River.
Tappe scored on runs of 92, 21 and six yards as the Patriots snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 2-4 overall. Pequot Lakes’ senior quarterback Jordan Redmond also played well in windy conditions with light snowfall. Redmond, who had been plagued by interceptions in recent weeks, completed 10 of 21 passes for 137 yards. He passed for one scored and also rushed for a touchdown.
“The guys had a lot more fun tonight, and really played well together,” said Pequot Lakes coach Chip Lohmiller. “We’ve got to savor this win, and keep working hard to get wins in our final two games.”
The Patriots scored on their opening drive as Redmond tallied on a 1-yard run in the opening minutes. C.J. Borleis’ extra-point kick missed but Pequot Lakes led 6-0. The 70-yard, nine-play drive was highlighted by a 13-yard run by Justin Mackenthun and a 31-yard pass reception by Kyle Narveson.
On Pequot Lakes’ next possession, the Patriots turned the ball over when Mackenthun fumbled at his own 20-yard line. The Pirates scored two plays later when senior Josh Edlund tallied on a 15-yard run. The kick gave Crookston a 7-6 lead with 4:49 left in the opening period.
A partially blocked punt later in the quarter helped the Pirates gain possession at their 40. A long pass and penalty quickly moved Crookston to the Patriots’ 10. Pequot Lakes’ defense did stop the Pirates on fourth down at their own one. The Patriots eventually moved the ball to the eight, and that’s where Tappe broke two tackles and electrified the crowd with a 92-yard touchdown run. Mackenthun rushed for the two-point conversion and Pequot Lakes led 14-7 as the opening quarter ended.
Crookston struggled on its next drive, including a quarterback sack by Travis Jacobson, and were forced to punt with the Patriots taking over at midfield. A nice pass from Redmond to Jacobson moved the ball to the Pirates’ nine. Pequot Lakes moved the ball, but were stopped on fourth down one foot short of the goal line after a Redmond run.
Crookston quickly moved to midfield with three first downs behind the running of Edlund. But they were eventually forced to punt, and Sabastain Elsenpeter returned the kick to the Pirates’ 16 with just over three minutes left in the half. Pequot Lakes was eventually stopped on an incomplete pass in the end zone on fourth down at the Crookston. The Pirates took over with 28 seconds remaining, and turned the ball over on a fumble recovery by Karl Satterlund at the Crookston 10. Pequot Lakes managed three plays but failed to score as time expired in the half.
The Patriots scored on their opening drive of the second half. They gained possession after a punt and marched 58 yards in seven plays, and scored on a 21-yard run by Tappe. The conversion run failed and it was 20-7.
Crookston started its next possession at midfield and scored four plays later when Alex Boone caught a pass from Dylan Klatt and raced 51-yards. The extra-point kick cut the deficit to 20-14 with 5:29 left in the quarter.
The teams traded punts before the Patriots gained possession at the Pirates’ 38 after a 27-yard punt return by Tappe. Pequot Lakes moved the ball to the Crookston eight, but eventually lost yardage and missed the field goal try.
A fumble by the Pirates was recovered by Dalton Dabill at the Crookston seven with 10:28 left in the game. Two plays later, Tappe raced into the end zone to give the Patriots a 26-14 lead. Redmond then passed to Kyle Sellner for the two-point conversion.
The Pirates didn’t quit as they put together a long drive starting at their own 20. Nine plays later, Edlund scored on a five-yard run. The kick missed and Pequot Lakes led 28-20 with 6:14 remaining.
Crookston’s onside kick was covered by the Patriots at midfield. Pequot Lakes drove to the three-yard line, and then scored on Redmond’s pass to Jacobson for a game-clinching touchdown with 2:47 left. The kick was blocked but the Patriots led 34-20.
Pequot Lakes finished with 435 total yards, including 291 yards rushing. The Pirates had 309 total yards, including 160 rushing. On defense, the Patriots were led by Elsenpeter with nine solo tackles and four assists, and Narveson with seven solo and two assists.
“We took better care of the ball tonight, and I thought Redmond, Tappe and Mackenthun all had big games for us on offense,” Lohmiller said. “Our defense made some big plays, and held Edlund down pretty well.”
