The Pequot Lakes Patriots finished third in the gold division at the 27th annual Crosby-Ironton Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15.

The Patriots were defeated by Hermantown 27-25, 26-28, 15-11 in the gold semifinals. Pequot Lakes then downed Robbinsdale-Cooper 25-20, 25-22 for third place.

The Patriots finished 2-0 in pool play after edging Carlton 25-23, 22-25, 15-11, and downing Pillager 25-12, 25-13. Pequot Lakes’ Kayla Miller served nine straight points late in the second game win over Pillager.

In the Gold semifinals, Hermantown won the first game on a kill by Steph Kallberg. Ashley Abear scored four points for the Patriots last in the game. The second game was also close, and it wasn’t decided until Rosie Mitchell and Abby Palmer had kills for the final points.

For the day, Abby Palmer finished with 31 kills while Kayla Miller added 25. Katie White had 21 set assists while Sabrina Aldin had 20.

“We played without Nicole Traut and Katie White had to leave in the afternoon because of another commitment,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale. “The other girls played well. You can’t be disappointed when we took (eventual champion) Hermantown to three games.”

In the third-place game, the Patriots led 19-17 before Morgan Lohmiller served two points and Kristin Rettkowski added a block. The game ended on a kill by Kayla Miller

Pine River-Backus won the Silver Division title.

Pequot Lakes, 7-4 overall, was scheduled to host Sebeka on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and then travel to Staples-Motley for a Mid-State matchup at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20.

W-DC 3, Patriots 1

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, ranked No. 7 in Class AA, dropped the first game before rallying past the visiting Pequot Lakes Patriots 21-25, 25-15, 25-7, 25-16 in Mid-State Conference action on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Emily Miron sparked W-DC with a total of 25 kills, 15 blocks and nine digs to help the Wolverines improve to 2-0 in the conference and 5-0 overall. The Patriots dropped to 0-1 in the conference and 4-3 overall.
