Facts should have been checked

Concerning Don Bye’s recent column, “Our corporate conscience, or lack thereof,” I have two questions I would like Mr. Bye to answer:

1. If, as you say, “I don’t pretend to have all the exact numbers and other details,” why would you then write an accusatory article that would need these very facts for verification of your thesis?

2. Did you bother to call any one or more of the city of Jackson’s mayor, chamber of commerce, city planner or school superintendent to ferret out the facts?

Well, I did, and it took all of 10 minutes. Good reporting necessitates asking questions instead of basing one’s opinion, let alone conclusions, on one’s emotions and bias.

Do I wish the best for Brainerd? Of course! But to purport to know what is going on in Jackson without eliciting facts from those in the know is utterly feckless and insulting to what good, investigative journalism should be.
