What did legislators really accomplish?

June 14, Flag Day, marks our wedding anniversary. For years, my daughter remembered our anniversary because the curbs of our city neighborhood were lined with flags every few feet.

This year, my city-dwelling daughter forgot. Those little plastic flags no longer fly on city curbs. This simple, heart-lifting act of American patriotism seems to have vanished. Is this indicative of the new American attitude?

Recently I have heard radio ads and received mailings regarding the accomplishments of our local elected politicians. They are touting their promises kept! In one breath I hear new job creation and tax cuts for small business owners, and yet our state legislators passed new taxes for business owners through the warehouse tax.

A postcard brags about instigating repayment of delayed school funding when in fact state law demands the repayment with surplus state dollars.

In 2012, the Republican-led Minnesota State House and Senate created a balanced budget with an $876 million surplus enabling repayment to schools and the state slush fund!

Next year’s budget steers hundreds of millions of dollars to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, the Mall of America in Bloomington, Illinois-based Baxter International, Maplewood-based 3M Co., and Missouri-based Emerson Electric Co. Gov. Dayton then line item vetoed $3 million to fight aquatic invasive species in our area lakes.

Even though it was difficult to keep up with all the new legislation this year, it looks like what was really accomplished was an additional $3 billion in new taxes, unionization of home daycare providers, redefining marriage, and future challenges to our religious liberties.

Perhaps Minnesota is ready for a change in direction.
