Freedom on the Fourth?

Email

What fun we will have this year on the Fourth of July in Brainerd, with Brainerd Community Action kicking off the event by becoming political and endorsing John Ward as our marshal. I had personally asked Community Action two weeks ago to not be political, as there are many options besides endorsing a candidate. A simple fix could have been to have our Sen. Carrie Ruud be a dual marshal.

Couldn’t Community Action find one other non-political person of the year, a past leader or even a non-partisan leader in Brainerd? When talking to Community Action the comment was made about John’s vote against “marriage” as being just one vote. It was our non-representing John that spoke for our area. His job was to represent us and he did not, so to see a full-page endorsement from Community Action for our “representative” is really an oxymoron. But, of course, it is free advertising.

I do not care about John’s achievements. I do care that he has voted against my freedom of religion and my freedom of speech. With one “marriage vote” John helped accomplished this. We are not more free this Fourth of July and we can thank our non-representing John for his part in it.

I can thank John that he did allow a clause in the bill that states, “Pastors are exempt from this bill,” but I am a Sunday school teacher and a motivational speaker. I am not protected to teach or speak freely, as of Aug. 1. Thanks, John.

I would recommend contacting Community Action at 829-5278 or www.brainerdcommunityaction.org, and ask Nancy to explain how John Ward is our symbol of freedom. I will be looking for help on the Fourth as well. Contact me at djkern@charter.net.

Freedom is not free, and to give away our freedom is not something to exalt.

Doug Kern,

Rural Brainerd
