Vote yes to gay marriage

The state Legislature will soon vote on a bill that would expand the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples. I hope our representative, Joe Radinovich, will vote yes.

We cannot legislate love. All Minnesotans deserve to be treated fairly under the law. When people are in love, whether it be with a member of the opposite or same sex, and want to commit to each other and form a family, they deserve to be treated equally under the law.

There are at least 515 instances in Minnesota law that protect partners who are married. These range from being able to be with one’s loved one who is hospitalized to the sharing of pensions to the transfer of assets upon one partner’s death. Marriage provides necessary protections for spouses and children.

Some say their religion teaches that gays and lesbians should be excluded from marriage. At our church, we believe God created human beings to be in relationship with God and each other. We understand that God is still speaking and continues to reveal new things to us today.

In the last several years, members of our congregation have felt God’s calling to accept gays and lesbians and welcome them fully in our church. This is the first church in which my partner of 35 years and I have felt welcomed and had our relationship affirmed. I hope someday soon the welcome we feel in our church will be extended more broadly within our society.

It’s time for our state to recognize the love and commitment shared by gay and lesbian couples is no different than that of heterosexual couples. We just want what others have: the opportunity to fall in love, get married and build a life together.

I urge Joe Radinovich to vote yes on the freedom to marry.
