Teachers are appreciated

Teachers are appreciated

As Teacher Appreciation Week approached, I considered how fortunate we have been with both children and the teachers they’ve had over the years. I remember my son Jackson’s first day of kindergarten and the surprising calm I had when I left him in the capable hands of Joe Koman. From that very first day, five years ago, I knew he was in the right place with the right people.

The same held true on our daughter, Isabelle’s, first day of kindergarten. Jackie Ward was the perfect mom-away-from-home our little girl needed. She quickly blossomed into an outgoing student and continued that way through first grade with LaRae Lambert.

But second grade threw a wrench in things when she began to exhibit a separation anxiety we hoped would go away when she walked back into Nisswa School. Unfortunately, it didn’t. However, it was the firm yet gentle hand of her new teacher, Sue Headlee, that encouraged her to overcome her fear.

May 6-10 marks National Teacher Appreciation Week. And like many parents, I have spent countless hours thinking what I could possibly give the very teachers who have second-parented my children over the years. But, how can you repay someone for dedicating their lives and careers to helping mold and shape our future?

So, instead, I write my thanks to the Mr. Komans, Mrs. Wards, Ms. Lamberts and Mrs. Headlees of the world for all you do, not just between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., but the countless hours outside of the school days and walls.

Unfortunately, in today’s society, I feel it’s far more common to criticize than compliment. So today, please accept the most heartfelt thanks from one very grateful mother. Know that you are appreciated more than you can ever imagine.
