Watch Crosslake City Council

Email News Alerts

In my previous letter to the editor, I urged all residents of Crosslake to watch the city council meetings. They are broadcast at noon and 6 p.m. every second Tuesday. We all need to be aware of the actions our new council might take.

As an example, the continuing council members have held private meetings with the newly elected council members along with an attorney who was not being paid by the city.

As a result of those meetings, our present city attorney made the following statement, and I quote:

“It has been my experience that the most valuable asset that a City Council possesses is the public’s trust. That trust is essential to the legitimacy of the City Council and those conducting the City’s business under the authority of the City Council. As the city attorney, my job is to represent the City and help implement policy set by the City Council. If that policy is decided in private, in a meeting that but for the passage of time would be in violation of the Open Meeting Law, my ability to implement that policy will fall under the same cloud of suspicion that has descended upon the four members that met with the (non city attorney). I prefer to maintain a higher standard in my law practice, and for that reason I prefer not to represent the City of Crosslake …”

After watching the video of one of the last special council meeting I would suggest that instead of asking the county P and Z members to observe our P and Z proceedings that the City Council consider a consultant to observe the City Council deliberations and actions.
