Mayor's Notebook: Thanks to Day of Caring participants

Email News Alerts

Everyone must be wondering where the Pequot Lakes “thanks” were for the wonderful Day of Caring that the high school students provided to the community on May 9, especially since the city of Pequot Lakes had four major projects.

It isn’t that we didn’t truly appreciate the program. It’s that I left town for just over two weeks that afternoon (after working in Trailside Park all morning) and this is my first opportunity to say thanks.

It was a great first event and I do look forward to next year ... that is, of course, if I can ever locate my four rakes that seem to have gone missing!

Events are starting to kick off in town. I would like to remind everyone of the annual Pet Parade on Saturday, June 15. There is no charge to participate but we would love to have lots of pets — the stranger the better — to participate in the parade.

Signup/lineup starts at 10 a.m. in the north parking lot by the middle school, and the parade starts promptly at 10:30 a.m. with the route going down Main Street with a red carpet at the end just in case your pet can do a trick.

There are lots of prizes, games, food and booths, and it’s a wonderful, fun event for young and old. Barb Merritt is once again in charge. Call her, 568-4695, if you have questions or would like to sign up for a booth.

By now, everyone should be looking forward to the Park Board’s summer Bands In The Park. This free, Saturday night, all-summer-long program kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the bandshell right in the center of town. The 7 p.m. time will be the consistent time all summer, and the library’s popcorn wagon will be pulled out and in place for the first concert.

Again, popcorn will be free, but donations to the library are always welcome. Also, look at businesses around town, the library, or city hall for the 2013 Park Brochure. This great pamphlet has all of the events going on for the year and names of the bands each week.

After that, it’s not much longer until our over-the-top Stars and Stripes extravaganza occurs. Sponsored by the chamber, it starts July 3 with a band in the park and fireworks. On the 4th, there is a parade at noon with booths all along the trail.

There is a real need for donations toward the fireworks. Please consider donating. Checks can be dropped off at the chamber building or at Lakes State Bank to help offset the cost of this event that we all enjoy so very much. Don’t delay!

We’re off to a great start. Please participate in and enjoy all of our events. I do hope you were able to enjoy last Saturday’s Cherry Car Show that the Lions organized. If you missed it, put it on your calendar for next year — it’s always the first Saturday of June.
