James A. Eckert, 84, of Backus, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014.

He was born in Marcell, Minn., to James and Margaret Eckert on July 2, 1929. Jim served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was wounded in combat, receiving the Purple Heart. He worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. He spent the last 22 years at their lake home in the Backus area where he enjoyed snowmobiling with his friends.

Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen; sons, Gregg (Judy), Ron, Joe and Mark; daughters, Nancy Stroth and Sue (Kevin) Timm; sisters, Ione Miller and Fern (Bob) Drayna; brother-in-law, Rudy Grabmeier; sisters-in-law, Ena Eckert and Marilyn Eckert; grandsons, Andrew and Sean Timm, and Adam Stroth; granddaughters, Rebecca (Pete) Lamkin, Celia (Jeremy) Anderson and Ginny Eckert; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls.
