Robert Duncan Sr., 96, of Hackensack (previously Columbia Heights), passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at his home.

He was born to Harry and Ida Duncan on Aug. 25, 1917, in Minneapolis. Bob served in the U.S. Cavalry prior to World War II, and during the war, served on a tank destroyer in Europe. After the war, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and continued his military service in the Army Reserves until his retirement in 1974.

Bob was one of the original pioneers of the Hackensack Kid’s Fishing Contest and was an active member of the Hackensack Legion and the Lighthouse Church. He was a true hero of the greatest generation, a steward of Trillium Lake, a pillar of the Hackensack community, a defender of the Common Loon and a great storyteller.

Bob is survived by his children, Susan, Robert Jr. (Gail), Kerry (Louise) and Jeff (Pam); his grandchildren, Joe, Beth, Stefanie, Tami, Tim, Tracy, Dijon, Dan, Branden and Scott; and his 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Bunny; and sister, Helen.

The family would like to thank Bob’s friends and neighbors, Good Samaritan Hospice and the members of the Lighthouse Church for always being there to help.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Lighthouse Church, Hackensack. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Hackensack. Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.
