John Milton Schmillen, 85, of Belle Plaine and formerly of the Pequot Lakes area, died Dec. 17, 2013, at Kingsway Retirement Living in Belle Plaine. Memorial service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine. The Rev. Ed Fredrich officiated. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday.

John was born in St. James on July 30, 1928, to John and Ruth (Quist) Schmillen. On April 2, 1954, he married Nadine Johnson. They made their home in the Bloomington and Burnsville areas. John worked as a vice president of First Bank of St. Paul for many years. Upon retirement, they moved to the Brainerd lakes area and settled in Pequot Lakes. John was an avid gardener, loved fishing, hunting and sports. He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Nadine, in May of 2013.

He is survived by his children, Deborah Taylor of Blaine, Minn., Susan (Michael) Becht of Rapid City, S.D., Robert (Jamee) West of Minnetrista, Minn., and Don (Liz) Schmillen of Lakeville, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
