Joyce Marie Kocian, 89, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at the Hospice Cottage in Luverne, Minn., surrounded by her family.

Joyce was born April 15, 1924, in Hibbing, Minn., the daughter of Floyd and Dorothy Archibald. She attended school in Marble, Minn. and graduated from Greenway High School in Coleraine, Minn. She played cello in a college trio and was a majorette with the Marble band.

Joyce married Bernard Kocian at St. Mary’s Church in Marble, Minn., on Sept. 2, 1943. Bernie passed away on Feb. 10, 1993 just before their 50th wedding anniversary. In their early married years they lived in St. Paul, Minn. and New Richmond, Wisc. In 1947 Joyce and Bernie moved to Bigfork, Minn. after purchasing a grocery store. Joyce worked with Bernie in the business and they raised four children, Marilyn, Mike, Kathy and Pat. Even though the business has changed locations three different times it has remained in the Kocian family for 66 years and is currently called Kocian’s Family Market and owned by son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Darla Kocian.

Joyce was very involved in the community with the Bigfork Hospital Auxiliary, Newcomers Club, Catholic Ladies Aid, the Bigfork Arts and Crafts Fair and she supported her children and grandchildren in many school activities.

In 2001 Joyce moved from Bigfork to Pine River, Minn., to be closer to daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and John. In 2009 Joyce moved to Adrian, Minn., to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Bill.

Joyce enjoyed traveling, playing cards, board games, painting, sewing, cooking, baking, wearing fine jewelry, clothes, fancy shoes and the joyous Christmas season, but most importantly spending time with family.

Joyce is survived by four children, Marilyn (John) Bueckers, Pine River, Michael (Darla) Kocian, Bigfork, Kathryn (Bill) Burzlaff, Adrian, Patrick (Marene) Kocian, White Bear Lake, Minn.; 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jean (Louis) Monico, Newport Beach, Calif., Barbara Worden, Buena Park, Calif., Bonnie (Walt) O”Neal, La Habra, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Kocian, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Rosemarie Kocian, River Falls, Wisc.

Mass of Christian burial was held at Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church in Bigfork on Nov. 9, 2013.
