Leanora Halstead, 89, of Backus and formerly of Gibbon, died Monday, July 29, 2013, at Essentia Health–St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.
Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Gibbon with Pastor David Winterfeldt officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon is in charge of the arrangements. Leanora is survived by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Halstead of Backus; stepdaughters and son-in-law, Judy Halstead of Woodbury, and Leanne and Bill Van Emburg of Chicago, Ill.; stepson and daughter-in-law, Jim and Shelia Halstead of Gibbon; grandchildren, Scott Dickmeyer, Erin Dickmeyer, Larissa Halstead, Jordan Halstead and Jack Van Emburg; great-grandson, Zach Dickmeyer; and a brother-in-law, Tom Perkins of Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mercedes Schwartz, Darlin Dahlk, Delain Vargason and Tookie Perkins; a brother, Lloyd Leske; nieces, Carolee Kutzke and Bonnie Schwartz; and a grandniece, Debbie Kutzke.
Leanora Swanee Leske was born May 10, 1924, in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, to August and Emelia (Niemann) Leske. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1942, then attended normal training and graduated from Mankato State College with a degree in elementary education. In 1978, she was united in marriage to Charles Halstead in Brownton.
Leanora was an elementary teacher for 37 years, with 26 of those years spent teaching in Gibbon. She retired in 1986. Leanora loved traveling, needlework, birds, reading and going out to eat with Chuck. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Gibbon.
