He was born in Elkhart, Ind., on July 14, 1929.

A Marine Corps sergeant, he was wounded in Korea and returned home to pursue a career in teaching. As an industrial arts teacher in the Platteville school system, he provided his students with many more opportunities than the regular curriculum. Bernard loved young people and provided his own children with a wonderful childhood filled with days at the lake in Minnesota, as well as many innovative creations at their Platteville home.

After retiring from teaching, he continued his hobbies of building and collecting, taking an interest in everything around him. He enjoyed his summers at his Minnesota lake home and winters in Holiday, Fla. A friend to all creatures great and small, from raising pet raccoons, skunks and squirrels to the wonderful dogs he had, his animals were an important part of his life.

Bernard was a member of several veterans’ organizations as well as the Moose and Elks clubs and enjoyed the camaraderie and the dances at each club.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Huehne); daughters, Debra (Denny) Bavery, Con (Martin) Pietz, Dinah Pitcher, Dawn Dickey and Linda (Greg) Pietz; stepchildren, Duane (Cheryl) Huehne, Doug (Anita) Huehne, Deb (Tom) Hamm and Laurie Cruse; 14 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
