Richard L. Hoel
Formerly of Pequot Lakes
Richard L. Hoel passed away from complications of pneumonia May 23 in Bellingham, Wash. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born April 26, 1930, to Aulger and Alice Hoel and spent his childhood in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Richard attended Luther College before enlisting in the Army. He met Charlotte, his wife of 59 years, while he was stationed in Florida and she was vacationing there with friends. They corresponded for two years while he was stationed in Europe and married on April 24, 1954, a few months after his discharge. They had two children: Jeffrey Lee and Jennifer Lynn.
Richard received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in audiology from the University of Iowa. He worked as an audiologist at the Houston Speech and Hearing Center and the University of Minnesota Hospital. He was owner of Lake Region Hearing Center in Pequot Lakes from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s.
Dick and Charlotte thoroughly enjoyed their years living on Clamshell Lake, first as weekenders and later as full-time residents. For more than 30 years their home was a gathering spot for friends and family and the source of many happy memories. Their favorite activities included golfing, snowmobiling, fishing, boating, gardening and spending time with loved ones.
In 2004 Dick and Char moved to Blaine, Wash., to be closer to their daughter and her family. In 2012 they moved to Bellingham, Wash.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife, Charlotte; his daughter, Jennifer Gary, and her husband, Scott (Seattle, Wash.); and three grandchildren, Kathryn (Malmo, Sweden), Jeffrey (London, England) and David (Seattle, Wash.). He is also survived by his sister, Lonna Leidal, and her husband, Lee; Charlotte’s sister, Leonore Lex; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his son, Jeff, who died of a brain tumor in 1977.
The family wishes to thank health care providers at St. Joseph’s in Bellingham for their compassion and excellent care. There will be a private memorial service at a later date.
