Leonard H. Phillips

A celebration of life open house for Leonard H. Phillips took place Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. Phillips died Jan. 17 from kidney failure surrounded by his family at his home in Anoka.

He was born March 11, 1920, in Havelock, Iowa, to Nicholas H. and Mable G. (Henderson) Phillips. The family moved to Pine River, Minn., in 1929.

Leonard graduated from Pine River High School in 1938 and returned the following year, earning his Normal Training Certificate. He taught in one-room and two-room schools until he entered the U.S. Army in October of 1941. His service included European-African-Middle Eastern Theater receiving four Bronze Battle Stars. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. He and Donna were married in 1949 and lived in Anoka for many years.

He is survived by his children, Vicky, Laurie (Larry), Sandra (Robert) and John (Donna); five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol Hague of Billings, Mont., and brother, John (Patricia) Phillips of Pine River.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his parents; and his sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen Gail (Jasper) Johnson, Alice Elaine (Harold) Walton and brother-in-law George Hauge.
