Nisswa Elementary School second-graders learned how trees are used to build homes, and they planted a maple tree outside their classroom Thursday, May 8.

The Arbor Day event was coordinated by the Mid-Minnesota Builders Association of Crow Wing, Wadena and lower Cass counties. Volunteers Damien Williams of Nor-Son Inc. and Andrew Raisanen of Backyard Reflections visited Kelly Gubrud’s classroom and interacted with students. The program’s goal is to teach students how trees are used to provide shelter for animals and people, and that trees are a renewable resources.

Volunteers also explain how trees are used to build homes and what is done to save trees during construction.
