Tiger Talk: Summer feeding program

After serving 135,500 meals, 6,500 after school snacks, many coffee carts and lots of a la carte sandwiches through March 31, you might think the school’s Food Service Department is beginning to wind down.

Actually, ordering next year’s groceries has already begun and we are working on our summer feeding program.

Dates for the Pine River-Backus Summer Feeding Program are Aug. 4-22. Breakfast will be served from 8-9 a.m., and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

We are an open site, meaning anyone 18 and younger is welcome to come at no charge. To eat, just show up. This will be our fourth year offering meals and we would really like to see the program grow.

With new awareness of children missing meals in Minnesota, I hope to spread the news and feed as many as possible. Menus will be posted to the school website and distributed in the community. We follow the same meal pattern requirements as during the school year, so meals look the same. We do offer a bigger selection of fresh fruits and veggies because of being in season with more farm to school options.

Minnesota Department of Education, Food and Nutrition, lists all the open feeding sites in the state. Look for a site near you! There are programs that will run all summer long and at various locations.

Great things are being done to help ensure that children do not go hungry in the summertime, or anytime.
