Pequot Lakes mock trial finishes twelfth at state

The Pequot Lakes High School (PLHS) mock trial team ended its season with a 12th-place finish out of 12 teams at the state tournament held March 11-12 in Duluth.

“Even though we didn’t finish where we wanted to be, the students showed fortitude and had fun,” said coach Dan Moddes. “The community should be proud of the diligence and grit of our students.”

The team faced Brainerd High School in the first round, the first time the teams have met in competition other than their yearly scrimmage to begin the season. Brainerd finished 10th in the tournament. PLHS went on to face Northfield High School in the second round and Lakeview High School in the third round. Those teams placed ninth and eighth, respectively.

The team from Breck School in Golden Valley took home first place and will compete in the National High School Mock Trial Championship May 8-10 in Madison, Wis.

Moddes said that now that the team has been to the tournament, it will have a better idea of what to expect if it makes it to the state competition again.

“I’m proud of the entire team,” he said. “These students aren’t afraid of a challenge.”
