PLHS Artist of the Month for February: Ashley Whitney
Family: Chris and Lisa Whitney; older brother, Chris Whitney.
Future plans: After graduating high school I plan to attend the University of North Dakota to become a pediatric nurse.
Hobbies and what you like about art: My hobbies are drawing and playing sports in my free time. I love art because I can escape from all of the drama and trouble in my life.
I have loved art ever since I was young. I would always bug my friends, asking if they would color with me because that’s all I ever wanted to do — from finger paintings in kindergarten to lettering and paintings nowadays.
I may not have been able to take as many art classes as I would have liked to, but I use up all of my free time sitting down with a pencil in between my fingers without a care in the world.
Art is a way for me to zone out and not care about anything else going on around me. I can escape from everything that is on my mind and just focus on the pencil and paper in front of me.
It is a way for me to express myself in ways that most people wouldn’t understand. Being at home is where I love to do my work and it’s where my best work is created.
My go-to style of art is drawing with a pencil on paper. I do my best work by visualizing something and creating it back onto the paper. I usually stick to working on different letterings and quotes, but I also hope to really get into acrylic and oil paintings.
Art means the world to me. My art usually is something meaningful to me or it’s posters for sporting events and student council, which I am usually seen making around the school.
Becoming Artist of the Month is a big accomplishment for me because it shows that my art means something and that I am finally good at something.
It makes me sad knowing that this is the last semester of art class until I graduate, but I know I will always find myself pulling out my sketchbook and working away on the next idea I have in mind.
