Tiger Talk: Read, read, read
February is another terrific month to be at an elementary school! Schools across the nation are celebrating “I Love To Read Month.”
At Pine River-Backus Elementary School, we hope to motivate our students to read, and especially have fun doing it! Here are some things we have done to make this an extra special month at our school:
Each morning one of our staff members chooses a story or part of a story to read over our morning announcements. Students get a chance to hear what the adults around the building are reading as well as what their interests are.
We hope it motivates them to read more at home, too. Some of our students even go and check out the same book from the library that they heard our staff member read over the announcements.
PR-B elementary students are planning to read more than 1,000 books at home this month. Students are keeping track of their books on a reading sheet that was sent home at the beginning of February.
Additionally, some students have received pledges from neighbors, friends and relatives. For each book they read, they are being “paid” a certain amount of money. How fun is it to get paid to read?
Our students will be donating the money they raise to our local food shelf the first week in March. We are so proud to give back to our community! What better way to do that than through reading?
We are also gearing up for National “Read Across America Week,” which takes place March 3-7. Our school is planning so many fun days that center around Dr. Seuss book themes. Here is a lineup of what we have in store:
• Monday, March 3: Book, “The Sleep Book;” theme, Pajama Day.
• Tuesday, March 4: Book, “Fox in Socks;” theme, Fun Socks or Shoes.
• Wednesday, March 5: Book, “Wacky Wednesday;” theme, Dress Wacky.
• Thursday, March 6: Book, “A Book About Me;” theme, Dress as Your Favorite Book Character.
• Friday, March 7: Book, “Cat in the Hat; theme, Cat in the Hat-Hat Day.
Also, our “Read-in” will take place with a special guest from 1-3 p.m. Friday.
We are having a terrific month! Proud to be PR-B!
