Pine River-Backus School recruits district residents, staff, board for strategic planning

Email

Pine River-Backus School held its first strategic planning meeting Feb. 11.

Those who attended the meetings shared feedback about what the school has done well or not so well recently. With guidance from elementary Principal Rick Aulie, concerned residents made lists of what at the school has had intentional or unintentional positive or less than positive effects. Some of the positives included utilization of Americorps workers, ROAR incentives, the school’s connection to local businesses and school recognition of safety.

Some less than positive issues included compatibility issues with iPads, communication gaps between grade levels and low test scores. Those present included iPads and snow days over the past year in both positive and negative categories.

Those present also prepared drafts of mission statements for the school and then voted on their favorites. Two statements tied with 15 votes.

They were:

• Students are raised in a school environment that focuses, supports and nurtures academic/social skills from birth to adult for 21st century employment and citizenship.

• We will work with our community to maximize all students’ learning by providing a community of learners, an adaptable system focusing on academic achievement and co-curricular excellence while providing them the skills to transform a community of learners into a community of productive citizens.

Participants in the strategic planning then proposed ways they could achieve these mission statements and voted again.

This was only one of the PR-B strategic planning meetings held this semester. Other meetings were held Feb. 13 and 18. A final meeting will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20. The results of these sessions have been recorded and will be presented to the Pine River-Backus School board at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26.
