Pequot Lakes High School juniors Emilee Buell and Seth Golden will represent Pequot Lakes as ExCEL Award candidates.

ExCEL — Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership — is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities and who are model citizens.

This is the 17th year that the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) has sponsored the ExCEL Award. Nominees must be juniors in high school who are making satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in an MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in school and work voluntarily in their community.

Buell is a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball. Buell is a letter-winner in volleyball and basketball. She also participates in band where she is a section leader.

Buell has been on the “A” honor roll since ninth grade and is a member of Student Council. When not involved in school activities, she volunteers in a variety of ways in her church.

Buell is the daughter of Patricia and Ryan Buell.

Golden is a two-sport athlete participating in cross country and golf. He was been named all conference honorable mention in cross country this past fall.

Golden also participates in band. He has been on the “A” honor roll the past two years. Golden volunteers with his church youth group when not busy with school-related activities.

He is the son of Robin and Darren Golden.

Statewide ExCEL winners will be announced during the MSHSL winter tournaments in early March.
