Black Bear 4-Hers learn about healthy snacks
Healthy Summer Snacks was the program topic for the May meeting of the Black Bear 4-H Club.
Mike Manders, Grand View Lodge executive chef, arranged for club members enrolled in the Food and Nutrition project to work with him in Grand View’s kitchen to prepare snacks to serve at the meeting.
“Mike is a great 4-H parent,” said club leader Cindy Terwilliger. “At the first meeting he attended with his son, Christopher, he offered to do anything he could to help the club learn about food and nutrition.”
Manders and the three teenage girls he instructed answered questions from the club before serving the food, which included fresh watermelon salad with feta cheese and pizza margherita featuring fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.
Abby Schreier shared her thoughts on the activity: “It was fun working in the Grand View kitchen. I learned about naan bread from India that we used for the pizza. We learned about the chef’s hat, called a toque, and the chef’s coat.”
Megan Vogt added, “This was a great way to learn how to make healthier pizza and salad, especially the pizza. It wasn’t what you’d call a normal pizza.”
Justine Campbell said, “It was really good to learn how to incorporate healthier ingredients into foods. Most people think healthier means gross, but if it looks good and smells good, you might want to try it.”
Club members appreciate Grand View allowing them to use the kitchen and thank Grand View for donating the ingredients.
