PR-B speech team competes

The Pine River-Backus speech team competed in post-season competitions the past two weekends.

On Saturday, April 6, the team ventured to Staples to compete in subsections for our area. Students had to qualify for subsections during the season’s meets.

At subsections, the following students received scores to allow them to move on to sections by placing in the top six in their category: Ben Remington and Kyle Tschida, Duo Interpretation; Claudina Williams, Informative Speaking; and Katey Hanson, Original Oratory.

Also competing but not gaining high enough scores to move on were: Tyler Cumberland and Jarod Birr, Creative Expression; Jason Cadwell and Taylor Siltman, and Courtni Peterson and Alicyn Koriak, Duo Interpretation; Tara Huston, Humorous Interpretation; and Troy Fetter, Prose.

On Saturday, April 13, PR-B’s qualifying students moved on to the section competition in Underwood against the best students from 23 area schools.

Remington and Tschida placed 14th in Duo Interpretation after three primary rounds.

Hanson placed in the top six in Original Oratory after three primary rounds. After competing in a final round, Hanson took home a medal for sixth place.

No PR-B students this year advanced to the state level. Only the top three at sections advance to state.

Many students this year showed lots of potential and met personal goals. Coaches are Deb Nelson and Kelly Johnson.
