Women in 1920s-30s movies topic of presentation

Join master storyteller and historian Alan Bohme for a presentation that deals with women in the movies in the 1920s and early 1930s. The class will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at Pequot Lakes High School.

The characters portrayed could be real women with their own feelings, thoughts, emotions, methods of expression, behaviors, styles of dress and the like. By 1934, this type of on-screen behavior was considered “dangerous” because it undermined the traditional roles of women and set bad moral examples for American youth.

For 30 years after this “code” was enforced, it was very rare for a woman on screen to behave in a way that a man did not approve of. There is a film to go along with this presentation that includes Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Norma Shearer, Clara Bow, Ann Harding, Jean Harlow and others.

There is often a lively discussion after the movie.
