Black Bear 4-H club hosts program on black bears

On March 21, Nancy and Glenn Krause presented a program at the Nisswa Community Center entitled “Seasons With the Bears” for those interested in learning more about the Minnesota black bear.

The presentation was sponsored by the Black Bear 4-H club, who supported the North American Bear Center in 2010 with a $100 donation. The young people of the club thought it was fitting that they support black bear research because of their club’s name.

The Krauses have been working with bears near their northern Minnesota home for 14 years. They shared stories of their favorite bears.

Peyton Wicklund, Black Bear 4-H Club president, said, “My favorite part of the presentation was when they showed slides of bears who live by their cabin. Dot is my favorite bear because she does not like the color red.”

Glenn demonstrated how telemetry and signal emitting collars allow researchers to find hibernating bears. He and Nancy shared difficulties of keeping collars on bears and the process of replacing them. The bears are so familiar with the Krauses that for a handful of nuts or dates they’ll hold still long enough for collars to be replaced or adjusted.

Club members said this was a successful presentation because of the attendance and what was learned, and it was fun planning and hosting it. Donations received were divided among the club and the presenters.

Those attending left with a much better understanding of black bears.
