PR-B speech team earns awards in Pequot Lakes

The Pine River-Backus junior varsity speech team competed Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Pequot Lakes “Speech Wars” Invitational.

Katey Hanson took the gold medal (and a light saber!) for her original oratory on the deaf and blind.

Claudina Williams took the silver medal for her informative speech on Haiti.

Emma Armstrong and Judith Reed took home red ribbons for their duo interpretation of “The Twits” by Roald Dahl.

Also competing, but not receiving an award:

Creative Expression: Tyler Cumberland.

Dramatic Duo: Taylor Siltman and Jason Cadwell, Liliana Derkson and Brittany Dowling, and Courtney Peterson and Alicyn Kordiak.

Humorous Interpretation: Tara Huston and Austin Mackert.

Informative Speaking: Dustin Lane.

Prose: Austin Simon and Anthony Owczynsky.

Lumberjack Invitational

The team also competed at the highly competitive varsity level Lumberjack Invitational in Bemidji on Saturday, Feb. 23. While no one on the team took an award, many students met their goals for points earned at the meet.

Competing were:

Creative Expression: Don Owen.

Dramatic Duo: Ben Remington and Kyle Tschida, and Derkson and Dowling.

Humorous Interpretation: Huston.

Informative Speaking: Hanson and Williams.

Prose: Owczynsky and Troy Fetter.
