Reading to Rocky program continues at Pequot Lakes Library
On Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Pequot Lakes Library will again offer to the community’s children a certified pet therapy dog named Rocky.
The kids will read to Rocky. For this reason the program is limited to kids of reading age.
Because dogs are naturally nonjudgmental, children, especially those who struggle with reading, can benefit from reading to them.
Rocky, 11, is part husky, is very mellow and loves children. Although he has spent time visiting with older people at rest homes, this is his first time in a reading program.
Kids usually read to a reading dog for a 10- to 15-minute period, depending somewhat on the reading ability and concentration level of the child.
Rocky and his friend, Linda Shalley, who has investigated the program thoroughly, will be at the library on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. If you have, or know of, a child who would benefit from reading to Rocky, bring him or her in to the library when Rocky will be there.
