Deep Portage seeks submissions for anthology
In honor of Deep Portage Learning Center’s 40th anniversary, submissions are being sought for “The Spirit of Deep Portage,” a short anthology of creative nonfiction, nature facts and personal illustrations about the conservation reserve.
Deep Portage Learning Center is a residential environmental learning center fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Thousands of students visit Deep Portage each year to take part in environmental and conservation education programs.
In addition, Deep Portage serves groups, organizations, area residents and visitors with weekly classes, interpretive programs, wildflower garden displays, weekend retreats and study groups, land use demonstrations, summer camps and recreation opportunities of birding, hiking, hunting and skiing.
Deep Portage hopes to expand upon the practice of writing about the natural world. Both written and illustrative submissions to “The Spirit of Deep Portage” are being accepted. This is the first Deep Portage project of its kind, and the public is encouraged to participate.
Each writing submission can be science-based or creative nonfiction, fiction or poetry of all forms (that, of course, relate to Deep Portage Conservation Reserve). Like all forms of submissions, illustrations should be 100 percent original. They can be done in any medium that can be successfully represented in a book form.
These are to be sent either by hard-copy (mail) or in the InDesign format. The public is welcome to submit as many pieces as desired, but only previously unpublished works will be considered for publication.
Deep Portage is available for school visits, organizational meetings and training, family educational adventures, weekend retreats and teacher workshops. Groups can conduct their own agenda or, as most do, use the expertise of the Deep Portage faculty and accredited curriculum.
