ExCEL — Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership — is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities and who are model citizens.

This is the 16th year that the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) has sponsored the ExCEL Award. Nominees must be a junior in high school, making satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in an MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in school and work voluntarily in their community.

Miller is a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball. She is a letter-winner in all three sports and received all-conference honors in all three sports as well. She has been named to the Brainerd Dispatch all area volleyball and basketball teams.

Miller has been on the “A” honor roll since ninth grade and is a member of Student Council, Interact and Spanish Cub. She also volunteers in a variety of youth and community organizations. She is the daughter of Mary DeVahl and Robert Miller.

Mackenthun is a two-sport athlete, participating in football and wrestling. He has been named all-conference honorable mention in both sports.

He has been on the “B” honor roll since ninth grade. Mackenthun volunteers with youth sports as a coach and an official when not busy with school-related activities.

He is the son of Liz and James Mackenthun.

Statewide ExCEL winners will be announced during the MSHSL winter tournaments in early March.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
