IRS warns of new 'phishing scam'
The IRS has become aware of a new email scam that purports to tell the taxpayer his e-filed return did not go through. The IRS never corresponds with taxpayers via email; in fact, it is unlawful for them to do so.
If you want to check on the status of a tax return you have e-filed, go to www.irs.gov and click on “Where’s my refund?” If your return was prepared and e-filed by a tax professional, he/she will be able to tell you the date your return was accepted by the IRS.
If you get an unsolicited email that appears to be from the IRS, report it by forwarding it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you find a suspicious website that claims to be the IRS, send the site’s URL by email to email@example.com, using the subject line: suspicious website.
