Property tax due date extended for resorts, seasonal businesses

Email

Hearing the plight of resorts and affected seasonal businesses hurt by the late ice-out on area lakes and resulting lack of fishing opener, the 2013 Legislature extended the time resort owners and other seasonal business owners have to pay their first half property taxes by two weeks, from May 31 to June 15, for taxes payable in 2013 only.

Properties eligible for the extended due date are the same properties usually eligible to pay on May 31, which are those defined as “commercial use real property used for seasonal residential recreational purposes classified as class 1c or 4c.” Other eligible properties include commercial use real property classified as class 3a, provided that more than 60 percent of the gross income earned by the enterprise on the property is earned in May, June, July and August. Class 3a properties must file an affidavit as in the past to be eligible for the due date extension.

The affidavit form can be found on the Cass County website at www.co.cass.mn.us by visiting the “Paying Property Taxes” link.  Tax must be brought in or postmarked by June 14 to avoid late penalty.
