Tourism, marketing summit to feature Explore Minnesota speaker

The Brainerd Lakes Chamber, together with its GoSocial and Tourism Advisory committees, will host the 2013 Regional Tourism and Online Marketing Summit on Tuesday, April 30, at Grand View Lodge’s Gull Lake Center in Nisswa.

Keynote speaker will be John Edman, Explore Minnesota Tourism director, who is responsible for the development and implementation of statewide tourism plans, policies and programs to promote Minnesota as a tourism and travel destination.

He is the state’s chief spokesperson for state tourism-related issues and manages Explore Minnesota with approximately 50 full-time staff and an annual budget of $8.3 million.

The half-day conference will kick off with a welcome breakfast at 7:15 a.m., including a legislative update from Tom Kavanaugh, Kavanaugh’s Sylvan Lake Resort and board member of the Minnesota Resort and Campground Associatiotn, and then proceed with breakout sessions throughout the morning before concluding with the keynote luncheon at noon. Throughout the event, participants will have an opportunity to visit with trade show vendors.

Breakout session highlights:

Zac Swarthout and Chris and Mike Foy are proprietors of Ernie’s on Gull Lake for the past 18 months and will share their experience with reputation management at Ernie’s.

• A status check and a look into the future of social media. A few short years ago, few heard of, or envisioned, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and the like. What’s on the horizon for social media? A panel discussion with Brandon Knowles of Faster Solutions; Phil Seibel of DE Media/Brainerd Dispatch; Kathy (Schroeder) Sell of Atomic Learning; and Frank Soukup of Grand View Lodge.

Cost is $49 for Brainerd Lakes Chamber members and $79 for future members.
