Fireworks funding needed for Pequot Lakes show to go on
Attention, Pequot Lakes area residents: If you want July 3 to end with its traditional bang, it’s time to step up and help pay for the annual fireworks display.
“After last year’s events (Stars & Stripes Days and Bean Hole Days), businesses said it’s hard to support all these events and asked, ‘Can we look to community residents to support half of the fireworks?’” said Jenna Crawford, Pequot Lakes area director of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber.
So an account that currently has $5 in it must grow to $3,200 by Monday, June 9, for the show to go on at dusk Thursday, July 3. The fireworks show totals $6,700. Funding comes from chamber member businesses through sponsorships of Stars & Stripes Days and Bean Hole Days.
Those two events are not in jeopardy, Crawford said. July 3 events are still being finalized, and the traditional Fourth of July parade at noon, kiddie parade, craft market and other events will occur July 4. Bean Hole Days will be Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 and 9.
Crawford said Pequot Lakes has had Fourth of July fireworks for at least 30 years.
“Residents have witnessed these fireworks for years at no additional cost, so we’re asking people to step forward and donate $10, $20,” she said. “It’s been a tradition for years and we don’t want to see it go away. So we’re asking for help.”
