Child and Teen Checkups is a program promoting regular health screenings or well-child checkups to assure health problems are diagnosed and treated early, before they become more complex and treatment becomes more costly.

To qualify for a free checkup, individuals must be a resident of Crow Wing County, age 20 or younger and enrolled in Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare.

“The purpose of Child and Teen Checkups is to encourage parents to be proactive with their child’s health, taking them in for annual checkups rather than waiting until there’s a problem to see a doctor,” said Stephanie Kubas, Crow Wing County public health nurse.

The program covers annual dental and vision checkups, and medical checkups every two years after age 6, annually between the ages of 2 and 6 years old, and even more frequently from birth to 18 months.

Appointments can be scheduled by contacting participating providers and asking for a Child and Teen Checkup to ensure the visit is billed properly. More information, along with a current list of participating medical, dental and eye clinics located in Crow Wing County, can be found at www.ChildAndTeenCheckups.com.

The website also features a video called “Healthy and I Know It,” starring Crow Wing County children describing why it’s important to get checkups at all ages.

The Child and Teen Checkups program is federally required by the Social Security Act and is administered by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and Crow Wing County.
