Officers respond to accidental shooting in Fifty Lakes

At 5:17 p.m. Friday, April 18, the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a residence in Fifty Lakes for a report of a prowler. The caller, 61-year-old James Brustad, indicated there may be an intruder in the basement of his residence.

While officers were responding to the residence, additional information was received that Brustad had suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen area. Responding officers entered the residence, and Brustad was found inside with a gunshot wound.

He was treated on scene and later flown by air ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital. Officers on scene were unable to locate any sign of a prowler.

The investigation revealed the gunshot wound was the result of an accidental discharge of the firearm by Brustad.

According to hospital officials, Brustad was in good condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Crosslake and Breezy Point police departments and North Ambulance Service.
