Area legislators support tax bill

Area legislators ultimately supported legislation to cut taxes for more than one million middle class families and repeal business-to-business taxes. Following are their comments:

Sen. Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point: “I’m happy we were able to repeal these controversial business-to-business taxes with this bill. I’m also happy the bill addresses the multiple Federal Tax Conformity issues Minnesotans have been waiting for answers on. I wish we would have extended the marriage penalty conformity to 2013, which would have provided more the 600,000 Minnesotans with tax relief, but at least this is a step in the right direction.“

Rep. John Ward, DFL-Baxter: “With a growing economy and strong budget surplus, this is a great time to pass these tax cuts and continue building on the progress we’ve made to grow Minnesota’s middle class.”

Rep. Joe Radinovich, DFL-Crosby: “More than a million middle-class, working Minnesotans will receive a tax cut under this bill. We made a lot of progress in the last year and this is another step to expand economic opportunity.”

Sen. Paul Gazelka, R-Cass County: “It was vital to repeal many harmful taxes passed by Democrats last year from day one. I’m thrilled to see it is moving forward. I voted for the bill because at the end of the day it’s a step in the right direction but we could have done so much more. One of the things that I tried to carry forward was our income tax subtraction for military members looking to retire in Minnesota.”
