Teens without tans wanted

ST. PAUL -- Some Minnesota lawmakers want to combat cancer in teenagers by banning them from tanning beds.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Reps. JoAnn Ward of Woodbury, a retired teacher, and Chris Eaton of Brooklyn Center, a nurse, comes after a state Health Department survey showing that up a third of the state's teen girls used tanning beds in the past year.

Half went at least 10 times, the report indicated.

The Tan Free Teens Act is in response to reports of more than 1,000 new cases of melanoma cancer in Minnesota in a year, with 140 deaths.
