Echo Journal hires Perkins as staff writer
Chelsey Perkins has joined the Pineandlakes Echo Journal as staff writer.
Perkins, the daughter of Robert and Kim Perkins of Crosslake, is a 2004 Pequot Lakes High School (PLHS) honors graduate and a 2008 cum laude graduate of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in professional journalism.
Perkins began her journalism career interning at the Lake Country Echo in 2005 and went on to intern as a reporter at the Rochester and Austin Post-Bulletins the following summer.
While attending the University of Minnesota, Perkins worked first as a copy editor and page designer and later as an opinion columnist at The Minnesota Daily, the university’s student-run newspaper. She went on to intern at the national bimonthly magazine Utne Reader, where she was hired as the research editor in 2009.
After her position was eliminated because of budget cuts in 2011, Perkins interned with the Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy in Minneapolis as a food and farm journalist and worked most recently as a server at ACME Comedy Company in Minneapolis and Stout’s Pub in Falcon Heights.
After nearly 10 years away, Perkins has returned to the lakes area to fill the staff writer vacancy left in the wake of Kate Perkins’ departure. She lives in Brainerd with her fiancé and cat. Perkins and her fiancé hope to one day open a farm-to-table restaurant using produce they grow themselves.
