The Pequot Lakes School Board approved the district’s 2014 property tax levy Monday night, Dec. 16, in the amount of $4,728,493.41. That amount represents a 1.09 percent decrease from the 2013 levy.

Before its regular meeting Dec. 16, the board held its truth in taxation meeting. Two residents attended to ask about their taxes.

Superintendent Chris Lindholm said that around 75 percent of the school’s budget goes toward instruction.

At the last legislative session the Legislature authorized school districts to raise their board-approved operating levy (which is included in the property tax levy) to up to $300 per pupil without a public vote. Pequot Lakes has a $1 per pupil levy and was one of few districts that opted not to raise the operating levy, Lindholm said.

The district’s reasoning was that it didn’t have a solid plan for the funds, if it did increase the operating levy. And the district had just asked the public to fund the $33 million building bond referendum.
