Virginia Weisbrod Steuber receives Red Cross Armed Forces Legacy Award

Virginia Weisbrod Steuber, formerly of Crosslake, was recently awarded the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces Legacy Award for her service in World War II.

Her family — State Sen. Carrie Ruud, Ret. Col. George Steuber, Elizabeth DelVecchio and Adam Ruud — traveled to Washington, D.C., to accept the award on her behalf.

The Red Cross Armed Forces Legacy Award aims to document, honor and recognize the tremendous legacy of Red Cross staff who supported the U.S. military serving on combat, peacekeeping, peace-making and humanitarian missions.

In March of 1944, Ginny traveled to the European war zone on the Queen Mary. She and her unit drove an American Red Cross Club Mobile all across Europe serving soldiers coffee and doughnuts, often in harm’s way, under difficult conditions and many times on the front lines.

Virginia was in the Battle of the Bulge, Forest of Aachen, Omaha Beach and celebrated V-E Day in Germany. In 1945 she returned home having spent 18 months in Europe.

She passed away in May.
