A political rally will be held at the Pine River armory Monday evening, Oct. 31, with Edgar Mullins, candidate for state senator; Harry W. Christianson, candidate for U.S. Congress; and Clem Ryan, all-party chairman of the 6th District, also congressman Bernard of Duluth.

50 years ago, Oct. 25, 1963

From the Pine River Journal

Starting at 6:30 on Halloween night a collection of ghosts and goblins from the Methodist and Lutheran churches in Pine River will take part in a program of service for Unicef, the United Nations Children’s Fund. Entitled “The Trick is to Treat,” the program encourages children and youth to observe Halloween by collecting funds for children around the world who face hunger, sickness and ignorance.

Perhaps unconsciously, or without being willing to admit it, many Pine River residents have been able to see the “handwriting on the wall” ever since the beginning of the Durkee changeover with the large numbers of employees being laid off and not rehired.

Steps were taken to close a $30,000 deal for land proposed for Kitchigami Regional Library’s new headquarters.
