Nisswa receives award for use of Legacy Amendment funding

The Nisswa City Council on Wednesday, Oct. 16, received an award for its use of Legacy Amendment funding for projects that protect and enhance the outdoors.

Conservation Minnesota and Minnesota Citizens for the Arts declared Nisswa to be a Legacy Destination, symbolized by the award.

Specific projects cited include the Nisswa Lake Park project where the city acquired 2.1 acres on Nisswa Lake to support nature-based recreational activities, stormwater management for the Gull Lake watershed, and a Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre residency at Nisswa Elementary School the past few years.

Public safety

At the request of the Nisswa Firefighters Relief Association, the council agreed to raise from $2,400 to $2,800 the amount retired firefighters receive per year they served.

The department reported a slow couple of months in fire activity with a few medical calls.

Police had 165 calls for service in September. Calls included 29 traffic warnings, 29 agency assists, 20 medicals, 16 traffic citations, seven alarms and two arrests.

In other business Oct. 16, the council:

• Agreed to apply for a DNR Park Legacy Grant for Nisswa Lake Park.

• Sent a letter of support to Lake Shore for a DNR Legacy Grant trail application for a proposed trail along County Road 77.

• Upheld a Planning Commission/Board of Adjustment variance denial for John and Helen Puckropp. At issue was a building that didn’t meet setback and impervious coverage guidelines.

• Approved raises for two employees at Spirits municipal liquor store.

• Agreed to pay $182,679 for Smiley Road construction. The project will carry over to next spring when sod will be installed. Total project cost is $198,873.

• Agreed to pay $32,668 toward the public restroom/welcome center building downtown. The city saved $1,938 by eliminating gutters from the building and approved that change order. Total project cost is $343,384.

• Learned the new public restroom/welcome center building is scheduled to be open around Nov. 11. The Nisswa chamber plans a grand opening Friday, Nov. 29, the day of the City of Lights celebration.
