Backus man arrested in indecent exposure case

A 42-year-old Backus man was arrested Wednesday at a workplace in Pine River in connection with last week’s reported indecent exposure incident at Wal-Mart, Baxter Police Chief Jim Exsted said.

Exsted said the man was transported to Crow Wing County jail and formal charges of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct, which is a gross misdemeanor, are pending through Crow Wing County District Court.

The Baxter Police Department responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 26 of a possible indecent exposure incident at Wal-Mart. It was reported that a 6-year-old girl was approached by an unidentified male near the back of the store as she was shopping.

The girl was near her mother but not within eyesight. It is believed that the male approached the young girl, made inappropriate comments and possibly exposed himself.

Exsted said it was the help of the public that led to the arrest of the Backus man. Exsted said when the suspect’s description was published on the Brainerd Dispatch’s website around noon Tuesday and the newspaper sent out its breaking news alert through email, the police department received about a half dozen calls identifying the suspect.

Exsted thanked the public for its assistance with locating the suspect.
