The injured workers were taken to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd by North Ambulance. Their names and conditions weren’t released Friday morning.

Kevin Littman, director of operations for Nor-Son, said the injuries were not life-threatening.

“They were talking and stable. They were coherent,” he said, adding the workers were undergoing tests at the hospital. “We’re happy they’re recovering.”

Littman said there were 10-12 Nor-Son employees and subcontractor employees at the scene at the time of the accident.

Tim Holmes, Nisswa’s assistant fire chief, said when crews arrived at the scene Nor-Son workers and Acorn Nursery crane operators were working to get to the injured employees, who were partially trapped by collapsed truss work.

They weren’t buried, Holmes said, but the trusses were hindering rescue operations.

“We tended to patients and worked closely with Nor-Son and Acorn to make sure everyone was accounted for,” Holmes said, adding the injured employees “were all conscious and breathing.”

As a precaution, he said mutual aid was requested from the Brainerd Fire Department for its equipment associated with structural collapses. Littman said OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) representatives would go to the site to investigate and figure out what happened.

“That’s the mystery question right now,” he said.

According to a news release from the Nisswa Police Department, at 7:17 a.m. Friday, Nisswa police, Nisswa firefighters, Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Department, Pequot Lakes police and Brainerd firefighters responded to a call at the construction area at Timberwood Church in Nisswa.

Holmes said the construction crew was working within the remodel/addition area at the church.

According to Timberwood Church’s website, a 21,000-square-foot addition will add a 740-seat worship center, 3,500 square feet of gathering space with additional bathrooms, and offices and storage space.

The addition will give the church room to grow as its student and children’s ministries explode and Sunday morning services overflow. The additional space will allow the church to return to two services on the weekend.

Construction was to begin in July and be completed by next spring, according to the website.

“Luckily no no one was killed. Buildings and wood can be replaced,” Holmes said.
